Jackson Jr.'s downfall tied to objects, not power

CHICAGO (AP) ? For all the talk of Jesse Jackson Jr. aspiring to be a U.S. senator or mayor of the nation's third-largest city, his career wasn't ended by attempts to amass political power.

Instead, it was the former congressman's desire for flashy items ? a gold-plated Rolex watch, furs and collectibles, such as Eddie Van Halen's guitar.

In a state where stop-at-nothing political ambition has been well documented ? and often rewarded ? the seemingly frivolous cause of Jackson's undoing is seen by political observers and former colleagues as both nonsensical and sad.

"When you have a magic name like that, he was in position, waiting for the gun to go off, for mayor, the Senate ... he was playing with the big guys," said Paul Green, a longtime political scientist at Roosevelt University in Chicago who moderated Jackson's first congressional campaign debate. "To go down for this, you just feel sad."

Federal prosecutors on Friday charged Jackson Jr. with one count of conspiracy for allegedly spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal expenses. The Chicago Democrat's wife, former alderman Sandra Jackson, was charged with one count of filing false joint federal income tax returns.

Authorities say the returns, for the years 2006 through 2011, knowingly understated the income the couple received.

Both agreed to plead guilty in deals with federal prosecutors. Their sentencing dates have not been set, but the charges both carry possible sentences of several years in prison. Jackson Jr. also could be ordered to repay thousands of dollars in fines and forfeitures.

While former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich went to prison because he tried to trade President Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat for a more prestigious job or millions in campaign donations, Jackson could go to prison for, in part, buying memorabilia tied to martial arts movie star Bruce Lee.

The son of a civil rights icon, Jackson represented Illinois' 2nd District, which includes part of Chicago's South Side and south suburbs, for 17 years. He was wildly popular in his heavily Democratic district, consistently winning elections with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Jackson served as national co-chair of Obama's presidential campaign in 2008 and had his eyes on becoming mayor or a senator. But those hopes were dashed when his name surfaced as part of the Blagojevich corruption investigation and with revelations that Jackson had been involved in an extramarital affair.

Jackson denied any wrongdoing in the Blagojevich matter, which involved unproven allegations that he was involved in discussions to raise campaign funds in exchange for being appointed to Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Suddenly last summer, Jackson disappeared from public view for several weeks. His staff eventually revealed he was being treated for bipolar disorder and other medical issues.

When Jackson resigned from office in November, he cited his bipolar disorder and acknowledged he also was under federal investigation. Sandi Jackson resigned from her Chicago alderman seat in January.

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, who represents a neighboring district and visited Jackson Jr. shortly after his release from treatment at the Mayo Clinic, said the charges against the Jacksons "couldn't be more unfortunate."

"I think things probably just got out of hand for them and they got involved in making decisions that just didn't make a lot of good sense," Davis said.

Davis wondered whether the long list of luxury purchases mentioned in the federal criminal complaint were "an indication that his bipolar condition kind of was manifesting itself even then."

If so, he said, it's unfair to compare this situation to other Illinois corruption.

"It's hard to rationalize it," Davis said. "Not all elected officials in Illinois are corrupt or building any kind of political dynasty or trying to develop political power. Most individuals elected to public office are citizens who want to make the most effective use of themselves and make this world a better place in which to live."

Delmarie Cobb, a Chicago political consultant who worked on Jackson Jr.'s first campaign and was an aide to his father when he ran for president in 1988, said Saturday she was "absolutely astonished" by the news. She, too, believes Jackson Jr.'s actions were triggered by his bipolar disorder.

"It is just not the Jesse Jr. I knew," said Cobb, who's known Jackson Jr. since he was a senior in college and was present when he met Sandi.

"It's a very sad ending for everybody."

Intel's Perceptual Computing demonstrations hands-on (video)

Intels Perceptual Computing demonstrations handson video

We've just spent time with Intel's Mooly Eden, who is spearheading the chip maker's push into what it's calling "perceptual computing," which is using natural and intuitive interactions to control your PC. The company has partnered with Creative on a Kinect-esque 3D depth-camera that can be used to control applications and play games, do faux-green screen broadcasting and collaborate with colleagues. While Microsoft's motion-tracker is designed to encompass a whole room, Intel's has a shallower depth of field that's more suited for close-up work. We got to play with the company's demos away from the noise of the show floor, as well as playing a gesture-based version of Portal 2 by Sixsense that's shorn of the controllers that Eden used to demonstrate it in 2011. Interested in seeing what's likely to appear in what the company promises is the very near future? Head on down past the break.

How To Monitor Cellular Phone | Liberty

Technology has made communication and living easier. Mobile phones have grown to be so widespread that it simply does not seem sensible to have none. Because of cell phones, it is now possible to communicate from practically everywhere on this planet. Because of this development, a number of issues have also been made; the problem of cellular phone stealing has become a significant problem. A way of dealing with this problem is making use of a mobile phone tracker.

Cellular phone tracking makes it easy for folks who lose their own cell phones through stealing to retrieve them. With this type of tracking it becomes easy to identify the specific whereabouts of the cellular phone. As mentioned, the phone tracker can be wanted on account of theft; various other purposes include misplacement of a phone as well as when law enforcement officials want to nab a criminal.

To be able to track down the location of a mobile phone, it doesn?t need to be in a call. Nonetheless it will only be achievable when the cell phone is switched on. The cell phone may be located by way of a procedure called triangulation. This calls for figuring out its location by using 2 other set up points. These 2 towers will often send out cellular phone signals.

Keeping track of mobile devices is fairly new. But there are particular legalities associated with it. If you want more details, check out: http://cellphonetrackerx.net

MARION, Mass. (AP) ? A stray cat that spent at least a week stuck in a Massachusetts tree before plunging 80 feet to the ground and fleeing has been found, and all things considered, appears to be in good health.

A Marion Animal Hospital veterinarian said Wednesday it's "unbelievable" that the cat dubbed Fortunate has just a couple of pulled muscles and a possible parasitic infection.

The cat was spotted in a Rochester, Mass., tree on Christmas Eve. Several rescue attempts failed before firefighters cut the branch it was perched on Sunday. Cat shelter founder Pam Robinson finally trapped the skittish feline on Tuesday.

Robinson tells The Standard Times (http://bit.ly/Wngz47 ) she will keep the cat for a few weeks so it can regain weight before putting it up for adoption.

Android?s explosive content consumption growth threatens Apple

Android Content ConsumptionApple vs. Android

Smartphone market share surveys from IDC and Kantar have shown for a long time that the Android phone volume surge is leaving the iPhone in the dust in major growth markets from Brazil to India. But one thing that Apple has had on its side has been the propensity of iPhone owners to consume far more content than Android phone owners. One argument has been that it does not matter if iPhone has a 5% share vs. Android?s 40% share if Apple (AAPL) still dominates in? app revenue generation and browsing volume. Content is king. Another argument is that it does not matter who moves the most units, since only hardware margins count. Here Apple reigns supreme.

[More from BGR: First leaked picture of the Samsung Galaxy S IV emerges]

In the long run it?s difficult to say whether selling smartphones at extremely high margins is more important than dominating mobile content. As consumers keep shifting their precious entertainment consumption minutes to smartphones from television, print media and video games, the value of owning the mobile browsing and mobile application markets increases. Samsung (005930) is playing the deep game of flooding the world market with hundreds of millions of Android phones, most of them cheap, some of them very expensive. The goal is to blanket the globe with Samsung devices and bet that the content consumption of Android devices can catch up with Apple in aggregate.

[More from BGR: Google?s rumored ?X Phone? could be an ?attack on Samsung?]

That is why it?s interesting to see how different research houses started to detect clear signs of Android surge in content consumption in 2012. According to AppAnnie, Google Play showed 48% download growth over the summer, while iOS download volume ticked up by just 3%. In South Korea, Google Play moved ahead of iOS in app revenue generation.

And?StatCounter numbers on mobile browser usage seem to be pointing to the same direction. A year ago, Android phones had 17% mobile browsing market share in the Philippines vs. iPhone?s 12%. In January 2013 that lead had grown to 27% vs. 14%. This was the first month when Android took the browsing share lead from Opera in the Philippines. As feature phones fade, Android is grabbing their share of mobile page views.

In Brazil, Android?s mobile browser share has vaulted from 19% to 38% in a year. The iPhone still has a respectable 11% share, which is maybe five times higher than iPhone?s slice of smartphone shipments in Brazil. But that outperformance is no longer enough to keep up with the avalanche of Android phones that are now a prime vehicle for mobile content consumption for Brazil?s middle classes.

In Germany, Europe?s leading mobile market, Android has just pulled into a dramatic 51% vs. 31% lead in page views. In Russia, Android has opened a 25% vs. 18% lead in just the past five months. In affluent Japan, iPhone is leading Android by just 48% v. 44%.

Apple is still punching way above its unit volume class when it comes to grabbing consumers who use the smartphone most frequently for content consumption purposes. But the Google (GOOG)-Samsung strategy of swamping the market with cheap smartphones is working. Android?s lead in mobile browsing is growing at an accelerating rate in many major markets. The new wave of sub-$150 smartphones from Samsung, Huawei and ZTE is shooing consumers across the globe under Google?s mobile content umbrella. These consumers will shape the future of mapping, shopping, localized news and other mobile content industries.

One of these days Apple must choose between the goals of dominating mobile content and maintaining sky-high phone operating margins. The blended iPhone ASP of $620 is not compatible with competing against the Android Armada in Latin America, Africa and Asia, and perhaps not even in Germany or Spain.

Golson hopes Notre Dame's season ends on BCS note

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, right, talks with quarterback Everett Golson during practice, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Miami Dolphins' training facility in Davie, Fla. Notre Dame is scheduled to play Alabama on Monday, Jan. 7, in the BCS national championship NCAA college football game. (AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee)

(AP) ? When Everett Golson sees a piano, he usually sits down and starts entertaining. He plays several instruments, keeps a keyboard in his room and loves to sing.

Music is a huge part of his life, perhaps only topped by basketball.

And in Golson's spare time, he plays quarterback for Notre Dame.

"He's pretty good at his hobby," Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin said. "This being his hobby."

Golson's biggest game ? and biggest opportunity ? awaits Monday night when the top-ranked Fighting Irish (12-0) take on No. 2 Alabama (12-1) for the BCS national title. Golson's season started with him winning a competition to be the quarterback for a then-unranked team, and now he's got the chance to lead Notre Dame back to the top of college football.

Or in musical vernacular, to be ND's maestro.

"It is a big stage," Golson said. "I don't ride the wave too much. I'm kind of just focused on what's played between the yard lines, what's played on the field. Can't really focus on everything that's off the field because that's out of my control."

A redshirt freshman, Golson didn't play last season, instead running the scout team. He won starter job entering this season, yet even when he was picked to be under center as Notre Dame opened the season in Ireland against Navy, there was some question about how long he would actually be able to keep his spot.

Golson had all the answers. His numbers aren't catchy ? 11 passing touchdowns in 11 appearances ? but his record is unblemished, 10-0 as a starter.

"I think he understood more of what our coaches wanted from him," Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert said. "When they would coach him up on something, he kind of better understood that as the year went on."

One of the major issues Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly had with the Irish offense a year ago was its penchant for turning the ball over.

Golson rarely dealt with that problem.

Poised more often than not, Golson has only five interceptions in 282 attempts this season. He averages 191 passing yards per game ? only 79th-best in the nation ? but he's not necessarily asked to win games with wild throwing sprees, either. Kelly's mandate was simply for his quarterback to avoid the big mistake that would lose games.

So far, so good.

"First-ever college game in Dublin, Ireland, first-ever home game against Purdue, road game primetime Michigan State, night game at Notre Dame against Michigan, on the road at Oklahoma, on the road at USC, coming off the bench ... take any other quarterback this year and try to figure out if they've gone through as much as Everett Golson," Martin said. "To me it's not even close. Not even close."

It goes deeper than the experiences of 2012.

In Golson's mind, not getting a chance to play in 2011 may have been more significant in pushing his development along.

"I think me being put back on the scout team, it was just really a humbling experience for me," Golson said. "Coming in, I thought I was ready to play or had that confidence that I was ready to play, but it wasn't that way for me. I think being put back on the scout team, like I said, really humbled me, made me kind of reassess myself."

Even the Crimson Tide can see that.

When Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart first started breaking down tape of the Irish, he predictably watched every play of every game several times. And by the end of that film study, Smart knew the Golson who started the season isn't remotely close to the player who now is tasked with running the Irish offense.

"You can't give the guy the ability to run all around and make plays, yet that's what he's going to do, so it's who's got the greater will to contain and keep him in the pocket," Smart said. "So it's a tough thing. The guy is going to scramble. He's going to be a better, quicker athlete than the people we have up front."

The thing the Irish rave about most when talking about Golson is his confidence.

Even when things were tough at times this season ? particularly the game against Pittsburgh when Notre Dame trailed 20-6 entering the fourth quarter, then won 29-26 on his touchdown run in the third overtime ? Golson continually showed he can do the job.

"He's a very important part of our offense and he's a big playmaker," Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin said. "Any time we can take a hit off of him, it's going to be big. He's a playmaker. He makes plays."

If that happens Monday, Golson may make football's equivalent of beautiful music.

"The race is not given to the swift or the strong ... but it's given to the one that endures to the end," Golson said. "We're obviously the underdogs coming into this game. ... Alabama has, like I said, a great defense, great team, bigger, faster, stronger. But it's really about who's going to endure to the end."

The Best Health And Fitness Apps And Gadgets For Your New ...

The holidays wreak havoc on our bodies, with their mandatory over-indulgence in food as well as family and reminiscences. As we reflect on the year past ? its victories and losses ? we also begin looking ahead to the next, and in big ways or small, making plans to keep our momentum going.

For many, this involves taking health more seriously, whether it?s losing a few pounds, training for that first marathon, or just being more active. In turn, there?s been a lot of activity in the health space over the last year, as we?ve seen a number of apps and startups launch ? or continue iterating ? in the quest to help us make healthier choices, get in shape and conquer the world.

The health space is always in a state of transformation, but its evolution has accelerated of late, and technology is playing an increasingly vital role in this development. Improvements in sensor technology (and a reduction in the cost of production) have led to a boom in the popularity of health monitoring and tracking devices, which itself is becoming a crowded market.

Increased government involvement in health insurance and delivery (via ObamaCare), mobile technology, next-gen networks, Big Data and analytics are all having a disruptive effect on the industry, and startups have moved to take advantage.

For Quantified Self devotees, data-vores and the fitness conscious it?s a great time to be alive. Wearable health-tracing devices and platforms are maturing, as is the technology that makes them tick, and it won?t be long before doctors are prescribing mobile health apps and devices. The FDA?s recent approval of AliveCor?s iPhone-based heart monitor is a great example of how much there is to be excited about at the intersection of technology and health.

And for startups, there?s a lot to be excited about when deciding to build a business in this space, as we saw big developments from health-focused accelerators like Rock Health this year. A number of new accelerators hit the scene or turned into legitimate resources in 2012, like Startup Health, Healthbox, DreamIt, NY Digital Health Accelerator and Blueprint Health. Even Nike got into the game.

Nonetheless, with all the excitement in the space, it can be tough to cut through the noise, keep tabs on all the options and figure out which apps and startups should matter for you. Everyone has their own individual agenda, but collectively we?re all bound to be making a few health-related resolutions in preparation for 2013 and beyond.

Without further ado, the Health Stars:

The Wearable Tech

scaled-1054Jawbone UP

Up is one of the members of the exciting new generation of movement and health-tracking devices. The $129 bracelet suffered from some major problems when it first debuted, but it re-emerged in November with a much-improved look and experience. You can use it to track your activity during the day, your sleep at night, as well as log food intake and mood to give you a better overall picture of your health, happiness and calorie input and output.

The device comes with about a week?s worth of battery life in a single charge, is sleek and relatively unobtrusive, insulated in rubber and is waterproof. It includes a silent alarm that will wake you in the morning at the right time and a buzzer to remind you when it?s time to get up and get moving during the day.

Most of the re-design centers around the internal hardware and keeping it immune to wear and tear. The device doesn?t come with much connection to the desktop, or an external display, so, as John wrote recently, the appeal is mostly in its simplicity and the fact that it doesn?t scream ?nerd device? to all who see you wearing it. More in John?s write up here.

fitbit-one-editFitbit

Fitbit is another popular wearable activity tracker that, compared to Up, is slightly more favorable in the pricing department at $99. The small, lightweight device clips onto your clothing (and is meant to be worn somewhere on the torso) or fits into an elastic armband when sleeping. It works like a charm, tracking the number of steps one takes each day, the amount of sleep one gets each night (though this is still buggy), is sensitive to movement and offers a look into the number of calories burned each day.

It displays users? activity in a personal analytics linked to their Fitbit account, which is made easy through a wireless USB dongle that can be paired with its software in a few minutes. Users can keep the dongle in a USB port of sync it with Fitbit?s new Bluetooth radio functionality. As to the data, users can view their levels of activity in graphs, food and calorie intake, and add in other data, like blood pressure mood, etc. Like Up, it?s also got a silent alarm, and at $99, it?s becoming one of the most popular of these devices. [More in Chris' review here.]

screen-shot-2012-01-19-at-11-43-46-amNike+ FuelBand

Nike has been looking to leverage its brand recognition and massive footprint in the sports world to make waves in the fitness-tracking space with its wearable health tracker. The QS bracelet debuted in January 2012, and is now selling for $150 on Nike?s website ? and, giving it a leg up over others beyond what it already had from the Nike brand ? is now selling in the Apple Store across the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

Reviews of the FuelBand run the gamut, and with the trend seeming to be that, up to this point, it hasn?t been accurate enough to be used in real training and workouts, putting it more in the casual use category as a motivator for workouts and just getting off your butt. It looks great (although not unlike UP), comes with a great mobile app, and tracks whether or not you?re burning calories each day and meeting your basic fitness goals. It?s also started to gain some experimental integrations, like with Path, for example.

Nike also offers similar apps like Nike+ Running and Training Club in its growing arsenal of smartphone fitness motivators.

screen-shot-2012-11-29-at-4-31-31-amBasis

I say this haltingly, not having spent significant time with it yet, but Basis? new health-tracking wrist watch is probably the one I?m most excited about. The company quickly ran through its first batch after bringing the product to market in November and has since stopped accepting new orders to concentrate on meeting early demand.

The Basis band is a bit more expensive than the aforementioned gear at $200, and the question, of course, is whether there?s enough going on to justify that higher price. But from the looks of it, there is, especially for the Quantified Self and wristwatch nerds among us. The device comes with an LCD display (a la Pebble) that shows date and time, touch capacitive buttons, a 4-day battery life and Bluetooth support, which will be activated when the company releases its accompanying mobile apps (expected in the near future).

The device is loaded with sensors, which beyond using the accelerometer to measure sleep patterns, include an optical scanner to track blood flow (i.e. heart rate), a perspiration monitor, as well as skin and ambient temperature monitors to measure workout intensity, heat dissipation and so on. On top of that, the company offers a dashboard complete with a host of metrics, which include stuff like calories burned, steps taken, resting heart rate and hours slept and allows users to track their progress and create small, achievable goals to begin establishing healthy habits.

One of the more noteworthy aspects of Basis is that it adjusts to your daily activity (and sleep patterns) automatically, so you don?t have to mess around with different modes and settings. The idea is that it just works in the background, suggesting personalized goals and habits that you can actually meet ? when you want it to. There are still more pieces to add, like integrations with other devices, an API, mobile apps (and of course wider availability), but Basis looks to have a lot going for it ? at least at this early stage. [More in our review here.]

lark-new-productLark

Lark was originally a sleep-monitoring device, app and coaching service that recently expanded beyond sleep to go after the broader, general wellness market. The TechCrunch Disrupt grad now combines, a nighttime and daytime wristband and iOS app to track basic fitness statistics, food eaten, sleep logged, calories burned, distance traveled, and so on. Lark CEO Julia Hu recently told TechCrunch that Lark has sold ?tens of thousands? of devices, and that 73 percent of insomniacs saw an improvement after using Lark Pro for a month. The wristbands are designed by Ammunition ? which also designed the Beats by Dre headphones ? and through its new platform the startup is trying to move beyond its initial, core user base: Athletes.

The app and wristband combo now offer one-tap diet tracking, which allows users to tap a button to indicate they?re eating, tracking dietary info, stress and productivity data to help users make more informed decisions about their health. The platform offers personalized advice, developed in consultation with its scientific advisors, which include Stanford ?neuroeconomists,? psychologists and sleep experts and so on. The ?Larklife? product, which includes the two wristbands and mobile apps, will sell for $150. Lark looks great and has a lot to offer, but it does have to contend with the fact that others are offering a lot of this functionality in one device ? at competitive prices.

Misfit Wearables? Shine is another elegant-looking activity tracker that isn?t yet available but looks promising.

Amiigo, which, described in our recent coverage, is a ?fitness app and lightweight plastic bracelet (with detachable shoe-clip) that can identify the type of exercise you?re doing and tell you how well you?re doing it as you?re doing it, thanks to a variety of sensors analysing how your body is responding as you run, bike, swim (yes it?s waterproof), or whatever your preferred exercise poison.?

This Android and iOS app is one of the strongest in the category of those that look to turn your smartphone into a personal trainer. RunKeeper is part motivator, part tracker and (long-term) part health graph. The app allows you to track your walks, runs, bike rides, hikes, etc. by using the GPS in your phone, keeping stats on each activity, comparing those stats, setting short-term and long-term goals, offers customizable training plans, and voice coaching. The startup also aims to be a health and fitness data aggregator (or graph) and appeal to Quantified Self enthusiasts by connecting to Bluetooth and leveraging its API to integrates with Fitbit, WeightTraining, Fitocracy, Lose It!, Gympact and GAIN Fitness, among others.

The company just passed its 100th integration, leading in this regard. However, RunKeeper co-founder and CEO Jason Jacobs tells us there?s still a long way to go, as the category heats up and more apps and devices become available on the market.

The startup now has over 14 million users and many, he says, are looking to tie in data from other health apps to their RunKeeper accounts, especially as the company now allows them to earn credits for their workouts and apply them to corporate wellness programs, fitness games, rewards systems and so on. Usage of these integrations, Jacobs tells us, grew 825 percent year-over-year in 2012. Part of the reason Mark Zuckerberg included RunKeeper in a short list of apps that had caught his attention this year.

As to what?s next, Jacobs said that the startup will be looking to more tightly integrate the data from its partners into the core RunKeeper experience in the coming months ? and to better integrate RunKeeper data into theirs ? and will be announcing a number of partnerships in the next quarter as well.

screen-shot-2012-10-30-at-10-38-55-amRuntastic

This one may be better known to European readers, as Runtastic got its start across the pond, but it?s beginning to establish a footprint in the U.S. as well. And overall, it was a good year for the startup, which has looked to carve a name for itself in the space by becoming a full-service health and fitness platform. Traditionally, it?s been focused on tracking and coaching fitness enthusiast through outdoor recreation, allowing users to take advantage of fitness plans with voice coaching, as well as track and analyze their exercise data, monitoring speed, elevation and distance and storing that info in the cloud to measure progress against yourself and others (along with some cool ?PRO? features for Android users.)

More recently, it?s expanded into ?indoor? fitness as well, with motion-activated apps for activities like push ups and pull ups, and now offers a heart-monitoring app to boot. All in all, a productive 2012 for Runtastic has meant the launch of seven new apps for a total of 14 (including free and PRO/paid apps), over 12 million downloads this year alone (for over 16 million total), along with the addition of 5 million registered users on Runtastic.com, the launch of hardware in Europe (a heart rate monitor with GPS watch, armband and chest strap), integration with MyFitnessPal as a launch partner for the debut of its API, Google Earth integration and the launch of a fitness channel on YouTube. Going forward, users can expect more apps, more integrations, and the launch of its hardware in the U.S. during Q1. [More in our coverage here.]

screen-shot-2012-11-27-at-6-34-24-amLift

Lift is a great-looking iPhone app that?s operating behind an ambitious goal: Improving human potential. The Obvious-incubated and now venture-backed startup wants to help you reach your goal, whether that?s getting in shape, living healthier, becoming more productive, or being more kind to animals ? or your mother in law.

The app helps you break down your challenging personal goals into micro habits in order to make it easier to gain momentum and, presumably, achieve those goals. For Lift, it?s all about simplicity; while many startups and app developers say that, Lift really means it. Users create and join habits, clicking Lift?s big button if they?ve met their goal that day, and all activity is public, where users can cheerlead for their peers and receive encouragement of their own. The app pushes your accumulated data into good-looking graphs and charts, showing you how consistent you?ve been in meeting your new, positive habits.

Last week, the startup updated its app in the hopes of helping people meet their New Year?s resolutions, adding reminders (the most-requested feature), along with updating the overall user experience. In a crowded space, where companies like Basis are building some of this functionality into their wearable tech experiences, it will be more difficult for apps like Lift to stand out. However, the company recently recruited Matt Matteson, employee numero uno at Path and is backed by the guys behind Twitter, so it?s got some heavy-weight support. And focus on simplicity is a big leg-up in the data-noisy world of Quantified Self apps and devices.

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 2.24.57 AM Beeminder

Beeminder is attempting to take an evil-genius approach to motivating you to reach your goals. Namely, if you don?t stay on track towards your stated goal every day, Beeminder will charge you a predetermined amount, starting at $5, that increases each time you fall off track. The idea is that you quickly reach an amount that motivates you. Your rational, forward-thinking self is putting this restriction on your lazy, impetuous self in order to make it do the things you really want to do. Beeminder works for any quantifiable goal, like losing weight, exercising three times a week, or even productivity goals like checking things off your to-do list. It can automatically track your data from other services like Fitbit, Withings, and RunKeeper.

Beeminder is similar to StickK.com, but more data-oriented. Basing your commitment on a graph of your progress also creates flexibility (without defeating the point of a commitment contract). You can adjust your goal at any time, but updates take effect in a week, so if you want to be lazy, you have to plan ahead to be lazy.

screen-shot-2012-11-13-at-13-11-12Retrofit

Retrofit, which just raised $8 million led by DFJ, is a weight-loss program designed for busy people that uses a little bit of Skype, Fitbit, connected, wireless scales and live mentorship from wellness experts to help you get in shape. Retrofit allows users to set small, achievable weight loss goals ? one pound per week is the typical maximum target ? and private Skype video sessions with real, live fitness instructors to combat empty promises and increase healthy outcomes.

It incorporates data from your wearable health-tracking devices (like Fitbit) and wireless activity monitors and scales (which it provides in your ?welcome package?) and displays that information in a way that makes it easy to consume and customizable. What sets Retrofit apart is the personalized instruction from its wellness experts, who are registered dietitians, behavior coaches, and exercise physiologists and a ?maniacal? focus on helping you lose weight. Retrofit comes at a cost, though, with its starter, 10 percent weight loss program (which includes 12 expert sessions) beginning at $259/month for a year-long commitment and scaling up from there.

screen-shot-2012-05-21-at-6-41-19-pmMapMyFitness

MapMyFitness is a well-backed conglomeration of fitness-oriented websites and apps, which allows users to track and store their running, cycling, walking and hiking activity and access a considerable database of international routes, fitness calculators, events, listings, nutrition tracking and more. Founded in 2005, MapMyFitness is one of the early movers in the space and has grown into one of the more popular fitness apps in the App Store, passing 9 million registered users and 30 million downloads (across all apps) this summer.

The company has been expanding into international markets of late (along with its offline partnerships) and recently rebuilt its portfolio of websites, updating its routes, courses, personal challenges and integrating with the latest version of Google Maps? API. This means that users can now get real time info on weather, safer routes, directions, elevations, customer markers and traffic, on top of leaderboards, the ability to check-in at workout locations and compare progress to specific groups, be it friends, running rivals or local clubs. An oldie but a goodie.

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 1.35.43 AMKeas

Keas is a venture-backed social wellness platform brought to you by Adam Bosworth, a familiar name in the Health 2.0 space and one of the creators of Google Health. Keas allows companies to pick health goals and compete against each other to lose weight and get in shape, incentivized by a reward system which offers both real and virtual prizes.

The idea is to reduce the cost of healthcare plans and increase productivity in the enterprise by giving employees a wellness program that encourages participation and engagement by creating an experience that is fundamentally social and actually fun. Employees join teams of up to six people, competing for cash (or bragging rights) offered by their employers in pursuit of healthier lifestyles. One corporate client (Chilton hospital) reported that participating teams (about 40 percent of 1,300 employees) lost 1,230 pounds in a 12-week challenge. A great option for healthier workplaces.

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 4.31.16 AMGympact or Pact, Inc.

Pack, Inc. is a website and iPhone app that aims to complement all those new health data trackers, devices and training apps with an incentive plan that adds another layer of encouragement to get you off your butt. For Pact, the key to achieving your health and fitness goals revolves around negative motivation. Rather handing out points or badges, Pact offers peer pressure and cold, hard cash as its incentive, allowing users to check in and set goals for, say, how many times they?ll hit the gym in a given week and how much they?re willing to pay if they don?t reach that goal.

If you meet your goal, you earn a cash reward, and if not, the money goes into a community pot and is doled out to those who do hit their milestones. Pact Co-founder Yifan Zhang tells us that, since the startup launched in January of last year, it?s managed to retain 50 percent of its users and has been focused on creating value for its partners. For RunKeeper for example, Pact was able to increase RunKeeper usage by 64 percent across the board and by over 520 percent for its least active users by employing its monetary reward structure.

The startup was on its way to 1 million workouts facilitated in 2012, and is getting ready to release its Android app on January 1st, just in time for those New Year?s resolutions. [Check out our coverage here.]

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 4.34.39 AMCardiio

Along with AliveCor and Azumio, Rock Health grad Cardiio is the maker of a $5 heart rate monitoring app that requires you to touch the iPhone?s camera to capture your pulse ? all you have to do is let the app take a picture of your beautiful mug. The app?s sensors attempt to pick up minute differences in the color of your face that indicate changes in heart rate. It also offers long-term tracking to see how your resting heart rate morphs over time, along with comparisons to population averages. Next, the company plans to use this technology to expand into other types of biofeedback. [More in our coverage here.]

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 4.35.42 AMAzumio

Thanks the popularity of its biofeedback apps like Instant Heart Rate, Stress Doctor and Stress Check, this startup has seen over 30 million downloads across its iOS and Android apps. In July, it acquired SkyHealth, the makers of Fitness Buddy, one of the top-ranked paid health apps on the App Store. With the acquisition, Azumio now counts 15 health and fitness apps in its portfolio and is on a mission to create a fitness platform that gives users a complete picture of their health, spanning heart rate, stress, sleep behaviors, blood sugar levels and workout routines. With the recent addition of its Fitness Trainer app, Azumio is looking to become a mobile, adaptable personal trainer and health-tracker that allows you to reach your fitness goals without ever going to the gym. [Check out our coverage here.]

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 4.36.44 AMSkimble

Rock Health grad Skimble has created a motivation and fitness instruction platform with ?Workout Trainer? that offers hundreds of workouts, which are guided by a dynamic audio and visuals aimed at giving aspiring health nuts an easy way to exercise, regardless of how much time they have, or what equipment they have close at hand. The app looks great, and if you upgrade to the startup?s premium service, bland voice-overs are replaced by actual coaches and instructional videos ? a much more rewarding and useful experience.

Users can create their own workouts, adding it to the startup?s sizable multimedia exercise library, get reminders on your phone, via email, Facebook and Twitter, and share progress with friends. The modular database is easy to navigate, the app looks good, and everything syncs with user accounts on Skimble.com, and the subscription plan is affordable at $25/year.

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 5.24.16 AMFitocracy is a social network that aims to gamify fitness for those RPG lovers out there by awarding you with points, the ability to level-up and win badges in an attempt to encourage you to engage more consistently with your exercise routines and trips to the gym. The invite-only, free web app has you set up a profile, add a pic, your current weight (which you can keep private), and then introduces you to a status feed that shows updates and level-ups from other users, group categories where you can learn about and dig into niche fitness info, Q&As and data, forum-style. The app also includes access to public and group leaderboards, RunKeeper integration, activity trackers, which let you add sets and reps in particular categories, earn points for completing those activities and receiving real time notifications as you progress. The app currently has around 600,000 users. [Check out our coverage here.]

Screen shot 2012-12-26 at 5.27.41 AMEndomondo is a veteran fitness tracking app, launching in 2008, that recently passed 10 million registered users (with 3 million+ coming in 2012 alone), putting it in the ballpark of MapMyFitness, Azumio, RunKeeper and Runtastic. The app, which is especially popular in Europe, is, as Chris wrote recently, ?part personal trainer and part fitness-focused Facebook,? which runs across platforms and lets users track workouts, share with its community of exercise enthusiasts, with a focus on the social and collaborative side of fitness. [More in TC coverage here.]

The Honorables

GAIN Fitness offers personal trainers, digital-style in an app that lets these coaches help you create interactive, personalized work out routines that help you through easy-to-reach fitness goals. Workouts and plans are matched to your personal fitness level, goals and available time ? instantly and from the comfort of your mobile device. [See Colleen's GAIN test drive here.]

Zombies, Run is an awesome running game that immerses you in an action-packed story (mixed with your own music) that you play while jogging in the park or running on a treadmill. Basically, zombies chase you as you run, and the faster you move and better you perform, the longer you remain free from craving brains ? and that is what?s important.

JEFIT is an app that makes training routines and workout regimens that were initially only available to bodybuilders open and free to the average, non-bodybuilder, like you and me. The app lets you choose from a long list of exercises, comes with animations and how-to tips that are searchable by muscle group and available equipment. The app makes it a cinch to track your routines, rest and to sync your data with your web-based account.

Pocket Yoga is by far the best app for developing yoga skills at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home. The app includes voice instruction and visual guides, illustrated images of different poses and posture, as well as a dictionary of postures and positions that describes the benefit of each so that you know why you?re humiliating yourself with something called ?the downward dog.?

Lose It! is another app that helps you shed those extra pounds by allowing you to track your food consumption and compare to previous meals, monitor nutrient-intake (protein, fat, carbs, etc.), log packaged foods through the app?s barcode scanner, and access a sizable database of both foods and activities.

MyFitnessPal offers aspiring weight-shedders a food diary, diet profile and huge database of food items to track calorie intake, along with discussion forums to ask questions of those who?ve already walked similar paths.

Weight Watchers is another oldie-but-goodie that helps you track food intake, calories logged, associate meals and particular foods to a point system that helps you gamify your diet. Weight Watchers was one of the first to do so, and it?s adapted nicely to mobile, where it now allows you to scan barcodes to see the ?point value? of products while you?re at the grocery store.

Everest is a cool app for doing everything from setting goals and dreams, and getting in shape to learning Italian.

DietBet is similar in concept to Pact, Inc, offering a social dieting platform that asks users to make a financial commitment (i.e. put up cash) to encourage themselves and their friends to hit their weight loss targets. Users create teams that compete against each other, with the first person to lose four percent of their starting weight getting the pot (or total money pledged). DietBet verifies weight loss through photos and algorithmic auditing.

HealthRally is another ?crowdmotivator? platform that leverages peer pressure and real, live rewards to help you get healthy. Users can enlist friends and family to rally behind them as supporters, with your cheerleading squad pitching in to pay for a new iPad or some other sweet reward to keep you on track. Chavez still has 'severe' respiratory problem

AP file

In this photo provided by Miraflores Presidential Press Office, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez speaks during a cabinet meeting at the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, Venezuela, Nov. 8, 2012.

By Reuters

CARACAS - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is still suffering a "severe" respiratory infection that has hindered his breathing as he struggles to recover from cancer surgery in Cuba, the government said on Thursday.

The 58-year-old socialist leader has not been seen in public nor heard from in more than three weeks. Officials say he is in delicate condition after his fourth operation in just 18 months for an undisclosed form of cancer in his pelvic area.

"Comandante Chavez has faced complications as a result of a severe lung infection," Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said in the latest official update on the president's condition.

"This infection has caused a breathing insufficiency that requires Comandante Chavez to comply strictly with medical treatment," the communique added, giving no further details.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro had earlier returned to Venezuela on Thursday after visiting Chavez in hospital as rumors swirled that the president could be close to death.

Flanked by senior government figures including Diosdado Cabello, the head of the National Assembly, Maduro toured a coffee production plant in Caracas - the type of visit that the president made frequently before he fell ill.

"He is conscious of the battle that he's in, and has the same fighting spirit as always, with the same strength and energy as always, with his confidence and security," Maduro said. "We're going to be alongside him with the same strength and the same energy."

Maduro said Cabello, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez and Chavez's elder brother Adan, among others, had all been with the president in the Havana hospital.

This handout image released by the Venezuelan Presidency shows Communications Minister Ernesto Villegas reading a statement on the health of President Hugo Chavez in Caracas, Jan. 3

Venezuelan bonds rallied to five-year highs earlier on Thursday on rumors that Chavez's health had taken a turn for the worse. Foreign investors generally hope for a more business-friendly government in Venezuela, and its assets have rallied in recent months on news of his illness.

In scenes that recalled Chavez's hours-long televised visits to building sites, hospitals and oil refineries, Maduro told workers at the nationalized Fama de America factory that there was no "transition" taking place in the country.

"The only transition in Venezuela is the transition to socialism," he said in comments carried live by state television.

"It began six years ago, ordered by Comandante Hugo Chavez as chief and president, elected, re-elected and ratified, much as it pains the bourgeois hucksters and the right, who have done so much damage to our fatherland."

Chavez's abrupt exit from the political scene would be a huge shock for the South American OPEC nation. His oil-financed socialism has made him a hero to the poor majority but critics call him a dictator.

His condition is being watched closely by Latin American allies that have benefited from his help, as well as investors attracted by Venezuela's lucrative and widely traded debt.

'Make no mistake'
Chavez is still set to be sworn in on January 10, as spelled out in the constitution. If he were to die or had to step aside, new elections would be held within 30 days, with Maduro running as the ruling Socialist Party (PSUV) candidate.

While the constitution gives January 10 as the start of a new presidential term, it does not explicitly state what happens if a president-elect cannot take office on that date.

Top PSUV officials have suggested that Chavez's inauguration could be postponed - while the opposition says any delay would be just the latest sign the former soldier is not fit to govern.

Cabello said the "Chavismo" movement was in pain but remained resolute, and he issued a warning to the opposition: "Make no mistake about these people or this revolution. It is going to cost you very, but very, dearly," he said.

On Saturday, Cabello will likely be re-elected as head of the Chavista-dominated National Assembly, a key post that could see him assume Chavez's role temporarily while new elections are called should the president have to step down.

In the past Cabello has been considered as a rival of Maduro, but the pair have been at pains to deny that. Their appearance side-by-side at the coffee factory on Thursday looked to be the latest effort to project a unified front.

Last year, Chavez staged what appeared to be remarkable comeback from the disease to win re-election to a new six-year term in October despite being weakened by radiation therapy. But he returned to Cuba for more treatment within weeks of his win.

Officials have said he suffered unexpected bleeding and then a respiratory infection after a six-hour operation on December 11. That respiratory infection caused further complications, they have said, without giving more details.

The head of the opposition's Democratic Unity coalition, Ramon Aveledo, has accused the authorities of breaking a pledge to keep Venezuelans informed about Chavez's health.

And one opposition leader suggested on Thursday that legislators should form an official commission to visit Cuba and assess the president's condition for themselves.

Maduro hit back in his televised comments, saying the public had been provided with updates almost every day, and he accused Aveledo of orchestrating a campaign of misinformation.

"We have no doubt Mr. Aveledo is behind the campaign of sick rumors that began on Twitter and Facebook," Maduro said.

The launch of EnMast -- an online small business community | EnMast

? a dwarf standing on the shoulders of a giant may see farther than a giant himself.? ~ Robert Burton, in The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621)

launchToday, we (finally) launched our membership area at EnMast. This isn?t an achievement on par with free falling from space, but it?s a big deal for us. This was my first foray into e-commmerce and to say it was a rough start is a major understatement. We?ve been working on this site for the last two years to get it to this point. No, not full-time. I have another business that is my primary focus, but suffice it to say it?s been a lot of work. For me, this launch is a big milestone.

But as I reflect on what it has taken to get here I realize that there is no way that I could have gotten here on my own. I have my team members Bridget Ingebrigtsen?and Devan Perine who have rewritten my words, fixed my mistakes and put in hundreds of hours in building the site. There?s Debbie Saro, Terry Green?and the team at BizEase ? people whom I?ve never met in person yet they have done terrific work making WordPress sing and bringing the site to life. Kris Bates and the whole BatesMeron team did the design and the original programming ? you guys make me look good!

But if I?m really honest, there are so many more people who?s work and ideas have contributed to getting me to this point. I have a terrific community of Internet marketers and online experts that I have learned from over and over again. Andy Crestodina and the whole crew at Orbit Media Studios, Gini Dietrich, Mana Ionescu, Jeannie Walters and my whole Vistage group have all been generous with their ideas, feedback, advice and general awesomeness. There is no way I would have gotten here without them (and many others).

Still further, WordPress and the Copyblogger tools are essential to making this site possible. Matt Mullenweg, Brian Clark?and hundreds of open source contributors created fabulous flexible software that enabled me, a business guy, to build an e-commerce site. But really, if I sit and think about all the software, hardware and other tools I use to do my work every day ? that make my work possible ? there are hundreds (likely thousands) of people who make this happen.

I?m not trying to give the online equivalent to an Oscar speech. I?m just pausing to recognize that no man is an island; there are no solo achievements. If EnMast goes on to serve 100 business owners or 10,000 will largely be out of my hands. You ? the audience, the Internet, the participants ? will determine that by learning, commenting and sharing what you learn. That is what will make EnMast a success.

So thank you, all of you! I look forward to seeing where all of this goes!

Bisexual men on the 'down low' run risk for poor mental health

Jan. 2, 2013 ? Bisexual men are less likely to disclose and more likely to conceal their sexual orientation than gay men. In the first study to look at the mental health of this population, researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health found that greater concealment of homosexual behavior was associated with more symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The study published in the American Psychological Association's Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, examined bisexual men "on the down low," a subgroup of bisexual men who live predominantly heterosexual lives and do not disclose their same-sex behavior, a group that has not been studied to date. The researchers studied 203 nongay-identified men in New York City, who self-reported being behaviorally bisexual and had not disclosed their same-sex behavior to their female partners.

According to findings, men who live with a wife or girlfriend, who think of themselves as heterosexual, and who have a lower frequency of sex with men were more likely to conceal their same-sex behavior. Greater frequency of sex with women also correlated with greater concealment. Men with a household income of $30,000 or more per year reported greater concealment about their same-sex behavior than men with lower incomes.

"Our research provides information on the factors that might contribute to greater concealment among this group of behaviorally bisexual men," said Eric Schrimshaw, PhD, assistant professor of Sociomedical Sciences and lead author. "Such information is critical to understanding which of these bisexual men may be at greatest risk for mental health problems."

Nearly 38% of the men reported that they have not shared with anyone that they have sex with men. Only 41% reported that they had confided in a best friend or parent.

Dr. Schrimshaw and colleagues found that greater concealment correlated with more symptoms of depression and anxiety and lower positive emotions. However, disclosure to a few close friends or family did not seem to help; disclosure to confidants was not associated with good mental health.

"The fact that concealment, but not disclosure, was associated with the mental health of these bisexual men is critically important for the way therapeutic interventions are conducted in this population," said Karolynn Siegel, PhD, professor of Sociomedical Sciences and co-author. "Although disclosure may result in acceptance from family and friends, in other cases -- particularly with female partners -- disclosure may also result in rejecting reactions, which are adversely associated with mental health."

The research also suggests reasons why concealment was negatively associated with mental health. Bisexual men who were more concerned than others about concealing their same-sex behavior also tended to report lower levels of social support and more internalized homophobia -- that is, negative attitudes toward their same-sex behavior.

The findings indicate that publically disclosing their same-sex behavior may not be necessary to their mental health, as long as bisexual men have adequate emotional support to cope with other stressors in their lives. Professionals who do therapeutic work with bisexual men may wish to focus instead on helping such men reduce their perceived need to conceal their same-sex behavior and accept their sexual orientation.

Preckwinkle, Business Leaders Celebrate End Of '08 Sales Tax Hike ...

CHICAGO (CBS) ? It?s not very often that we hear about taxes going down, but on Wednesday, retailers and elected officials were celebrating the final roll-back of Cook County?s sales tax increase pushed through by former County Board President Todd Stroger in 2008.

WBBM Newsradio?s Mike Krauser reports the Abt Electronics store in Northbrook was among the thousands of Cook County businesses that stand to gain, especially with its proximity to Lake County, and its now only slightly lower taxes.

?It makes a huge difference,? said company president Michael Abt. ?It?s very significant.?

  • Stroger Sales Tax Eliminated
  • WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser

He said the real competition for brick-and-mortar stores is the Internet.

?You know, where there?s no tax from out-of-state,? he said.

Even so, for businesses, the elimination of the sales tax hike is cause for celebration.

?Our consumers vote with their feet every day,? said Tanya Triche, vice president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association. ?Cook County is lowering taxes, and that?s a major thing to say in this kind of economy.?

Jerry Roper, president of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce said the final rollback of the Stroger sales tax hike would mean $87 million in annual tax savings for Cook County consumers.

Cook County commissioners slashed the penny-on-the-dollar sales tax hike in half in 2009, with the 2010 elections approaching. When Toni Preckwinkle, a Chicago alderman at the time, ran against Stroger, she promised to phase out the rest of the tax hike, and cut a deal with commissioners after taking office.

Preckwinkle said the overall savings from rolling back the sales tax is $440 million.

?I don?t think a one percent decrease in the sales tax is symbolic, it?s significant. It surely is significant loss in revenue in the county, and that means a significant gain for our businesses and working families,? she said.

Preckwinkle said losing all that tax revenue has forced the county to get creative in balancing its budget, and to cut a number of costs.

?It?s difficult to fix complicated problems, and it?s sometimes very tempting just to raise taxes,? she said.

The so-called ?Stroger Sales Tax? increased Chicago?s combined sales taxes to 10.25 percent in 2008. That rate has now dropped to 9.25 percent, putting Chicago in second place behind Phoenix for sales tax rates among the 10 largest cities in the U.S.

Amazon Apologizes For Netflix Outage - Business Insider

Amazon issued a long technical explanation and apology for the outage that took Netflix down on Christmas Eve, without ever mentioning the rival online-video service by name.

The outage lasted all night and part of Christmas Day.

Netflix was the most notable outage, but it wasn't the only one. Amazon's downtime affected other customers, like Salesforce.com's Heroku. And Because Heroku is itself a cloud service that hosts other company's apps, this mean that Amazon's outage affected all kinds of companies.

It did not, however, affect Amazon's own movie-streaming service that competes with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video.

On Saturday, Amazon explained that human error caused the initial problem.? Someone inadvertently deleted some very important data. It promised this particular error would never happen again:

"We want to apologize. We know how critical our services are to our customers? businesses, and we know this disruption came at an inopportune time for some of our customers. We will do everything we can to learn from this event and use it to drive further improvement in the ELB service."

Because movie-watching is a big tradition on Christmas, it was Netflix's outage that created the most fuss. Netflix fielded a long string of tweets on its customer service account,?@Netflixhelps, where it noted?that Amazon was to blame.

This, of course, prompted a lot of witty tweets in response like this one:

The service was mostly restored by 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time on December 25, but it left people wondering if Netflix was wise to trust Amazon's cloud so thoroughly.

Last month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings?said that by the end of 2013, he wants Netflix to host 100% of its service on Amazon's cloud, which would make Netflix the biggest customer for Amazon Web Services.

A Room Called Chinaberry Balcony - Azalea Inn and Gardens

chinaberry-sidegal6Be still my heart. A room called Chinaberry Balcony with a fireplace AND a balcony AND a jetted air tub in historic Savannah, GA exists. This bed and breakfast room is a reminder of renewal as these nights are getting longer, albeit a little bit colder.

In the holiday season of hectic merrymaking, it?s easy to forget to take care of ourselves. I?d like to take a moment to reflect on the good that can come of planning a winter vacation in Savannah to take care of yourself, and maybe your loved one too!

Winter is a time for hibernation, and a time for rest. It can also be a time to plan for your next great thing. Winter travel isn?t traditionally on your average person?s agenda but I?ll wager that it?s worth it. As a sidenote, Black History Month in Savannah is jam-packed with amazing activities! Winter travel is unexpected and this B&B room might just be the ticket for you to pave the way into the life that you want to live.

We all RESOLVE to make better as the new year approaches. Most New Years Resolutions come with a promise to grow. And, what better thing to teach us about growth than plants? Staying in Savannah, in the one and only Chinaberry Balcony room at Azalea Inn & Gardens is the start of what can be your most wonderful winter journey.

The name of our B&B is attached with a floral meaning. AZALEA blooms represent the sentiment to ?take care of yourself, for me?. When we take care of ourselves, our friends and family will notice, and be enriched as we grow. Now, to grow.

You?ll notice that the color of the Inn is a sunshine-like yellow. Yellow is most welcoming color that we can imagine. The walls of Chinaberry Balcony are also painted with the golden hue that matches the vintage fireplace tiles. Yellow also happens to be the color of the most hospitable fruit ? the pineapple. Pineapples are carved into our white picket fence indicating how welcome you can feel when you step into our Inn. We hope you?ll notice that little touch.
