LIBERTY, Texas (AP) ? The case shocked and divided the small Southeast Texas town where authorities allege an 11-year-old girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted over a period of months in 2010 by a group of 20 males.
Now the first trial stemming from the case is set to be heard by a jury.
Opening statements in the trial of Eric McGowen were scheduled for Wednesday in Liberty.
McGowen is among 14 adults charged in the case. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Prosecutors and McGowen's defense attorney have declined to comment because of a gag order in the case.
Authorities say the girl was assaulted at least five times between mid-September and early December 2010 by males ranging in age from a middle school student to a 28-year-old. The alleged rapes took place in Cleveland, located about 45 miles northeast of Houston. Prosecutors say McGowen, 20, assaulted the girl in October 2010. The trial is being held in the nearby county seat of Liberty.
The investigation began in December 2010, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he had seen a lurid cellphone video that showed the girl being raped in an abandoned trailer.
Those charged included two top athletes at the local high school and adults with criminal records.
The case brought unflattering attention to Cleveland, a town of 9,000 people, after some residents suggested the girl was in part responsible for what happened, saying she wore makeup, looked older and wasn't properly supervised by her parents. Other community residents, as well as groups from outside of town, sharply criticized those suggestions.
The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.
Two other adults have previously pleaded guilty, with one receiving a 15-year prison term and the other awaiting sentencing. Six juveniles who were charged also have previously pleaded guilty. They received 7-year prison terms, but their sentences were suspended and they were put on probation for that amount of time.
Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Novartis AG and Incyte Corp. said Tuesday that European Union regulators approved their blood cancer drug Jakavi.
The drug is approved to reduce swelling of the spleen, one of the symptoms of the disease. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in November and it is sold under the name Jakafi. Its generic name is ruxolitinib.
Myelofibrosis causes abnormal blood cells to build up in bone marrow, forming thick scar tissue that slows the production of healthy blood cells. To make up for the shortage, other organs including the liver and the spleen begin producing blood cells. That causes swelling of the spleen. The condition also causes anemia, fatigue, and pain.
Incyte markets the drug in the U.S. and Novartis, a Swiss drug company, has the rights to market the drug in all other markets as a cancer treatment.
Incyte shares lost 13 cents to $20.16 in afternoon trading and U.S.-traded shares of Novartis slipped 6 cents to $59.32.
Shares of Incyte are down 19 percent since the company reported its second-quarter results on Aug. 2, but in total the stock is up about 60 percent since Jakafi was approved in mid-November.

NEW YORK (AP) ? When hurricanes, blizzards or other severe weather disrupt flights, some airlines are more accommodating than others in letting passengers rebook.
Tropical Storm Isaac is sweeping into the Gulf of Mexico and all the airlines with flights to and from the region this week are waiving their normal fees for passengers to rebook trips. So-called change fees can be as high as $150 on a domestic trip.
While it's nice that airlines aren't charging you to rebook, the time you have to take your trip depends on your carrier.
Some airlines are giving passengers nearly a year to fly while others are requiring passengers to be on planes as quickly as Friday.
"They are all over the place," says George Hobica, founder of travel site AirfareWatchdog. He says the process should be standardized and that some of the airline requirements are harsh. "It's not the passengers' fault that a hurricane happened."
The government doesn't have rules for how much time airlines should give passengers to take their trip. The only protection passengers have is this: If their flight is canceled, the airlines must offer a refund.
Isaac, which could grow to a category 1 hurricane by late Tuesday night, has already led to more than 1,000 flight cancellations.
United Airlines, part of United Continental Holdings Inc. and Frontier Airlines, part of Republic Airways Holdings Inc., have the two most generous policies. American Airlines, part of AMR Corp., Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and US Airways Group Inc. have some of the most restrictive policies.
Dean Burri and his wife planned to fly American from their Florida home to the Bahamas for a one-night getaway this past weekend. The airline does offer a waiver for Florida passengers, but it doesn't carry over until next weekend.
"I find American's policy very cold-hearted, particularly in comparison to United's very reasonable policy," Burri says. "It's certainly not consumer friendly."
? United is offering passengers flying into affected cities three options. They can get a full refund whether or not their flight was cancelled. They can rebook on flights anytime within a year of the day they purchased their ticket and avoid a change fee ? but will have to pay for any difference in price. They can rebook onto a flight by this weekend and avoid any change fee and fare differences.
? Frontier is letting those passengers who aren't already traveling move to a flight within its currently published schedule, which goes through March 17.
? American is telling passengers with tickets to eastern Florida that they must fly by Wednesday; Key West or western Florida by Friday and the Gulf Coast by Sunday.
? Delta is requiring travelers to or from Florida to start their revised plans by Friday and those to or from the Gulf Coast by Sunday.
? JetBlue is requiring Florida passengers to fly by Friday.
? US Airways also has Florida fliers traveling by Friday and those in the Gulf by Saturday.
? Virgin America is giving a bit more leeway, allowing trips to start by Sept. 4.
? Spirit Airlines is requiring all travel to be completed by Sept. 27.
? Southwest Airlines is requiring passengers to start their new trips within 14 days of the original date of travel. The airline doesn't charge change fees but requires passengers to pay for a difference in fare.
Even in natural disasters, airlines are doing what's best for their bottom line, not their customers, says Charlie Leocha, director of the Consumer Travel Alliance who sits on the Department of Transportation's Advisory Committee on Aviation Consumer Protections.
"The airlines are doing things to make money. I think they've given up the whole concept of being fair," says Leocha.
Each airline has its change requirements posted on their website.

This Tip of the Month will review and demonstrate the step change increase in productivity that is made possible through the implementation of the KnowledgeLake?s ECM imaging solution built on the SharePoint platform.? We will explain how an international company eliminated paper documents, automatically indexed documents into SharePoint and dramatically improved the ease of finding the right document.? KnowledgeLake is also one of the very few vendors that support Office 365, Microsoft?s cloud offering. By now many companies have realized the business benefits of the SharePoint platform through the four promises of Enable Collaboration, Find and Use Knowledge, Manage Business Performance and Streamline Processes.? With the implementation of third party tools such as KnowledgeLake, companies are seeing a real increase in productivity that drives real business results in efficiencies and cost savings.
One of our long time customers is an organization that must handle and process a massive amount of documents (up to 500,000 new documents a year).? Until now, all of the documents were stored as paper documents in thousands of file folders.? They actually had a very good process, but it was all paper based.? Even email correspondence was printed and filed.? If someone needed a copy of a document to send to one of their partners, they would have to physically go to the file room, retrieve the document, scan a copy and send the copy to their partner.? This can now be done with a few clicks of the mouse without the person ever leaving their desk. The impetus for looking at an alternative approach was that the company was moving to a new location and they wanted to avoid the need for a high density filing system, plus the wanted an improved process.
The solution involved the basic processes for managing the documents:
The KnowledgeLake tools that handle the above are:
Connect for SharePoint allows a user to save a document from Microsoft Outlook or other Microsoft office products directly into SharePoint without ever opening SharePoint.
Capture allows for the storing of documents directly from a PC attached scanner or from a network file folder into which scanned documents are placed.? The functionality is improved through the use of Barcode separator pages.? Just like Connect, Capture allows for the entry of the proper attributes for each document and indexes the documents into SharePoint directly without having to open up SharePoint.? Other key features of Capture are:
?
Capture Server allows for the scanning of a batch of documents and is intended for high volume scanning.? This tool integrates with multi-function scanners and provides many of the same features as Capture.? Capture Server is great for scanning batches of invoices, contracts or batches of documents that can automatically indexed into SharePoint through barcode integration.
A key component of KnowledgeLake is their Imaging product which provides rich search, retrieval and collaboration functionality. With Imaging you can: Search and find documents or list items across the SharePoint farm
The image below shows an example of the results of an Imaging search:
Once the project is complete, the company will realize true efficiencies and cost savings by;

We didn?t discriminate too much, but we did find ourselves mostly looking at more expensive homes. We would wander through some higher-end house and imagine rooms done up as nurseries and other rooms done up as the bedroom of a younger boy and we?d smile and dream.
Eventually, we came to realize that our daughter was going to arrive on the scene sooner rather than later and we needed to get serious about the house hunting. We started figuring out what we could actually afford.
Our back-of-the-envelope calculations were a bit disheartening. Then, we went to a lender to get pre-approved for a loan.
The amount we got pre-approved for was less than any home we had looked at up to that point. We had to completely start over with our home search, with significantly readjusted expectations.
For starters, we had wasted all of the visits we?d made to houses before we went to the lender. All of that time, when we thought we were figuring out just what we wanted and identifying some prospects, was more or less for naught. None of the homes we looked at were ones that we could actually afford.
Beyond that, we had to readjust our expectations, too. When we began to look at houses in our realistic price range, we couldn?t help but notice the differences between those houses and the ones we were previously looking at. It took us some time to adjust our expectations for the house we would get.
It?s very likely that we didn?t give a fair shake to some of the homes we looked at after our price adjustment, simply because we were still comparing them to the expensive homes.
A much better approach would have been to know what we could afford before we even started looking.
How could we have done that? The easiest method would have been to simply go to a lender or two and get pre-approved for our mortgage. This would have made it clear what the bank would lend to us.
Beyond that, calculating how much house you can really afford is a very wise move. You should not be investing more than 25% of your salary each year into mortgage payments. Some sources offer a higher percentage as a guideline, but I see no good reason to push your luck on a major purchasing decision like this one.
Calculate your family?s salary per year, then divide that by 48. You?ll see how much your monthly mortgage payment should be at most. Then, use a mortgage calculator to figure out what monthly payments look like for various amounts, interest rates, and terms so you get a feel for what you?ll be paying. I strongly encourage sticking with fifteen year mortgages.
If you start your search in a realistic place, you?re much more likely to find a property you?ll love as well as easily afford. Start off in the wrong place and it could be a very long search, indeed.

If you are reading this, it is possible that you or someone you know or love may need help for their heart! Here's to a healthy heart!
EAT FISH TWICE A WEEK
Heart disease is quite uncommon among people who eat lots of fish. Certain unsaturated fatty acids unique to fish are thought to be responsible for this protective effect. Eat at least four ounces of fish a week. Best: Rich, oily species like bluefish, mackerel, tuna and Salmon, but before you ingest whatever kind of fish you choose, you would be wise to make sure that fish is not contaminated with any chemicals. Whether you realize it or not, our environment has been compromised over and over. What about fish-oil supplements? There's little evidence that they're beneficial.
ALCOHOL AND ASPIRIN
Study after study has proven that an occasional drink raises levels of HDL cholesterol (that is your "good cholesterol"). Men whose HDL is below 30 should consider having one or two drinks daily (one if you're a woman). One drink equals a glass of wine, a shot of distilled spirits or 12 ounces of beer. A sip of alcohol or one drink a day for women, can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, especially when in combination with healthful eating habits, (more is not recommended) because too much alcohol raises the risk of other diseases that affect your liver or causes cancer. Low-dose aspirin therapy-one-half tablet a day-is proven to prevent heart attacks in those who have heart disease. Aspirin may also be beneficial for individuals at risk for heart disease. That includes men over 50 and postmenopausal women. There's no evidence that preventive aspirin therapy is beneficial to people with healthy hearts. Word of Caution: If you're allergic to aspirin, have ulcers or are prone to digestive bleeding, aspirin therapy is not for you. Consult your physician as to other alternatives.
CONSIDER TAKING ANTIOXIDANTS
Cholesterol damages arteries when it has been oxidized, via a chemical reaction analogous to rusting. Fortunately, the body has enzymes that prevent oxidation by "mopping up" the unstable molecules (free radicals) that cause oxidation. Three antioxidant nutrients - vitamins C and E and beta-carotene - give this natural defense system a big boost, especially when taken in combination. Sufficient levels of beta-carotene can easily be obtained by eating green and yellow vegetables, and vitamin C is abundant in citrus fruits. But it's hard to get much vitamin E from dietary sources, so start taking a daily supplement but research what quantities are enough for you, or ask your physician.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER SUPPLEMENTS?
There's been much less research on chromium than on the "big three" antioxidants. But in one study, volunteers took 200 micrograms of the mineral three times a day. Results: Levels of protective HDL cholesterol rose by 16%. That translates into 20% reduction in the risk for heart disease. If your HDL levels are below 30, and it cannot be raised via weight loss, exercise or moderate alcohol consumption, ask your doctor about taking, chromium supplements.
Important Note for Diabetics:
Glucose tolerance factor (GTF) seems to be safer than the more popular supplement, chromium iodinate. In another study involving more than 15,000 physicians and researchers, it was found that those whose blood contained high levels of the amino acid homocysteine were more likely to have a heart attack. Homocysteine seems to damage artery walls and promote clotting. To keep homocysteine levels down: take a daily supplement containing vitamins B-6 and B-12 and folic acid.
MEDICAL TESTS AND LAB -WORK-UP
Your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar should be checked each time you have a physical exam. However, if you are diabetic, a blood profile and A1C should be checked every three months. Moreover, you should have an electrocardiogram with each check-up. Stress tests aren't necessary unless you're having chest pains or other heart disease symptoms.

DENVER (AP) ? There will be more whole grains on school lunch menus this year, along with a wider selection of fruits and vegetables and other healthy options. The challenge is getting children to eat them.
"We don't want healthy trash cans. We want kids who are eating this stuff," said Kern Halls, a former Disney World restaurant manager who now works in school nutrition at Orange County Public Schools in Florida.
At a School Nutrition Association conference in Denver this summer, food workers heard tips about how to get children to make healthy food choices in the cafeteria.
The problem is a serious one for the nation's lunch-line managers, who are implementing the biggest update to federal school-food guidelines in 15 years.
New Department of Agriculture guidelines taking effect this fall set calorie and sodium limits for school meals. Schools must offer dark green, orange or red vegetables and legumes at least once a week, and students are required to select at least one vegetable or fruit per meal. Flavored milk must be nonfat, and there's a ban on artificial, artery-clogging trans fats.
At the conference, Halls demonstrated some healthy recipes for curious cafeteria managers, joining White House chef Sam Kass to prepare a veggie wrap using a whole-wheat tortilla.
Halls' main mission, though, was not pushing new recipes but teaching cafeteria managers marketing strategies used to great success by private-sector restaurants and food producers.
The first step, cafeteria workers were told, is to stop thinking of lunchtime as a break from academics, but a crucial part of a child's school day.
"Your job is not to serve kids food. Your job is motivate kids to be adventurous and healthy eaters," said Barb Mechura, head of nutrition services at schools in Hopkins, Minn.
Her school district recruited parent volunteers to be elementary-school "food coaches," touring cafeterias and handing out samples of fruits and vegetables. The food coaches would also demonstrate eating them. Food coaching may seem silly, but kids who have had chicken only as nuggets or patties may not know how to eat bone-in chicken and need to see how a grown-up eats it before trying it themselves.
As the kids graduate to middle and high schools, and grown-ups in the cafeteria aren't as welcome, schools can tap student ambassadors to be food coaches, perhaps asking the baseball team or a popular student athlete dish out veggies. Or, high school seniors might give underclassmen samples of a new vegetable coming to the cafeteria.
School cafeterias also are using cutting-edge market research. They're filming what kids eat, test-marketing new products before they go on the line and doing menu surveys to find out exactly what students think about a dish's taste, appearance and temperature.
A Colorado State University professor studied the dining habits of kids in Loveland, Colo., with an eye toward measuring ways to get them to choose healthier foods. Leslie Cunningham-Sabo, who photographed "before" and "after" pictures of kids' lunch trays, found that kids eat more fruits and vegetables if they have lunch after recess, instead of before recess. She found that corn consumption went up when generic "corn" labels were replaced with colorful cards describing the vegetable as "mellow yellow corn."
"Don't put veggies in opaque containers or give them boring labels like 'corn,'" Cunningham-Sabo told the lunch workers, showing diagrams of how to lay out a service line to encourage trips to the salad bar.
Another trick ? just like supermarkets place impulse buys like candy and chewing gum by the checkout, lunch lines should place easy-to-grab fruits and veggies by their own cash registers. Her study saw cafeterias double their sales of fresh fruit when they placed it colorful bowls in a convenient place.
"You really have to be in their face with what's available," Cunningham-Sabo said.
The marketing doesn't stop at the cafeteria doors. Lassen View Elementary School in Redding, Calif., got children to eat more fruits and vegetables when cafeteria manager Kathie Sardeson started a recess snack cart bringing the foods straight to the playground for kids to munch on.
Her school also bought an iPad 2 to raffle away to students who entered by choosing a healthy breakfast yogurt parfait and turning in tickets attached to the bottom. She tempted kids to try unusual flavors by giving out "Fear Factor Smoothies" including unexpected ingredients such as spinach. Sardeson said schools can be persuaded to invest more in nutrition promotions because the payoff is better students.
"We get a lot of feedback from teachers that behavior problems are way down because the kids are eating right," Sardeson said.
Educators are coming around to recognizing value in having better school food, Mechura told the cafeteria workers.
"Food is one of the most important influences on your everyday brain cells," Mechura said. Healthy eating habits, she argued, is as important as everything else schools are trying to teach.
"We have to change," Mechura said. "We have to build an environment that creates excitement about what we are doing rather than fear of new foods."

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) cautioned that the extreme heat is making suitable environments for pests to thrive. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration claim that the first half of 2012 has been the hottest since 1895. The incredibly warm weather makes the perfect conditions for ants, fleas, termites, and various other pests to flourish in addition to pest predicaments. What makes hot weather favorable for these bugs?
Cold-blooded critters
Professionals say numerous pests are cold-blooded, meaning they take their heat from external sources such as the sun (they are also referred to as ectotherms). Daniel Potter, professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky, says their cold-blooded physiology allows them to become active and survive in the hot weather. Meanwhile, the NPMA couldn't agree more.
This is especially the scenario with bugs with multiple broods such as ants and caterpillars. The hot climate assists to them increase in number, creating sizable concentrations of pests where you least expect them. As areas such as Fort Worth are taking serious hits from the drought, NPMA proposes getting in touch with an exterminator Fort Worth can provide for immediate pest management.
Looking for shelter indoors
Some pests may not prefer the scorching weather and may be compelled to take shelter in cooler spots like your attic or foundation. The NPMA cautions that homeowners may face more pests than the regular number over the duration of the intense heat period. However, several justify that global warming may expedite the bug issue. Suitable pest control Fort Worth can offer might be your best shot at protecting against the swarm from hitting your home where it hurts.
If you want to learn more about just how hot weather can affect insects, check out the official website of the NPMA at PestWorld.org. Do not loose time waiting for the insects to flourish; otherwise, it may be too late to do anything about them. Call an exterminator the moment signs of infestation crop up for efficient Fort Worth termite control and the suppression of growth of various other pests. To get more information, see http://www.pestworld.org/news-and-views/press-releases/press-releases/record-heat-across-country-makes-for-extra-buggy-summer/.

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- A humble soil bacterium called Ralstonia eutropha has a natural tendency, whenever it is stressed, to stop growing and put all its energy into making complex carbon compounds. Now scientists at MIT have taught this microbe a new trick: They've tinkered with its genes to persuade it to make fuel specifically, a kind of alcohol called isobutanol that can be directly substituted for, or blended with, gasoline.
Christopher Brigham, a research scientist in MIT's biology department who has been working to develop this bioengineered bacterium, is currently trying to get the organism to use a stream of carbon dioxide as its source of carbon, so that it could be used to make fuel out of emissions. Brigham is co-author of a paper on this research published this month in the journal Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology.
Brigham explains that in its natural state, when the microbe's source of essential nutrients (such as nitrate or phosphate) is restricted, "it will go into carbon-storage mode," essentially storing away food for later use when it senses that resources are limited.
"What it does is take whatever carbon is available, and stores it in the form of a polymer, which is similar in its properties to a lot of petroleum-based plastics," Brigham says. By knocking out a few genes, inserting a gene from another organism, and tinkering with the expression of other genes, Brigham and his colleagues were able to redirect the microbe to make fuel instead of plastic.
While the team is focusing on getting the microbe to use CO2 as a carbon source, with slightly different modifications the same microbe could also potentially turn almost any source of carbon, including agricultural waste or municipal waste, into useful fuel. In the laboratory, the microbes have been using fructose, a sugar, as their carbon source.
At this point, the MIT team which includes chemistry graduate student Jingnan Lu, biology postdoc Claudia Gai, and is led by Anthony Sinskey, professor of biology have demonstrated success in modifying the microbe's genes so that it converts carbon into isobutanol in an ongoing process.
"We've shown that, in continuous culture, we can get substantial amounts of isobutanol," Brigham says. Now, the researchers are focusing on finding ways to optimize the system to increase the rate of production and to design bioreactors to scale the process up to industrial levels.
Unlike some bioengineered systems in which microbes produce a wanted chemical within their bodies but have to be destroyed to retrieve the product, R. eutropha naturally expels the isobutanol into the surrounding fluid, where it can be continuously filtered out without stopping the production process, Brigham says. "We didn't have to add a transport system to get it out of the cell," he says.
A number of research groups are pursuing isobutanol production through various pathways, including other genetically modified organisms; at least two companies are already gearing up to produce it as a fuel, fuel additive or a feedstock for chemical production. Unlike some proposed biofuels, isobutanol can be used in current engines with little or no modification, and has already been used in some racing cars.
