National Lighting Blog ? Guide to common lighting terminologies

With new technologies like GU10 LED dimmable lamps emerging and advancing rapidly, it is high time to review your knowledge of lighting terminologies and what the terminologies mean. Our guide to common home improvement, repair and construction terminologies and definitions come in handy when you what to familiarise yourself with construction and home improvement lingo and what you need to know in lighting in order to nail your construction or home improvement projects.

GU10

GU10GU10 is a type of standard fitting bayonet mount designed for light bulbs. It is commonly found on halogen lamps like MR16 that consist of a halogen bulb or capsule. Common types of GU10 lamps like the 35 watt and 50 watt versions of GU10 LED dimmable produce a narrow beam of light and are usually cheaper than most energy saving lamps.

Lumens

Lumens are a standard measure of the intensity of light produced by a single source. A lumens is roughly equivalent to the total amount of light from a single birthday candle that falls on one square foot of area that is one foot away from the candle. A 400-500 Lumen GU10 LED dimmable lamp, for example, indicates the intensity of light the lamp puts out on one square foot of area that is one foot away from the source relative to the light a candle puts out on a similar square foot area.

Fire Rated

Fire rating indicates the length of time a material or fixture can literally withstand or hold up when on fire. A fire rated fixture shows results of a standard fire rating test conducted on the fixture and is usually expressed in units of time because emphasis is on how long the fixture can withstand fire for occupants to escape safely in the event of a fire emergency.

Bulkhead

BulkheadsBulkhead are a type of oval, round or conical external light fixtures made from die-cast, aluminium and stainless steel. Bulkhead lamps are weather-proof and have a frost ribbed glass usually with mounting options. Lambs like emergency exit GU10 LED dimmable bulkhead lights are stylish and quite durable.

LED

A light-emitting diode, abbreviated as LED, is a semiconductor material or light source that emits light when a current passes through it. Early light-emitting diodes only produced low-intensity red light, but modern LEDs like GU10 LED dimmable lamps can produce high brightness across infrared, ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. LEDs have a wide variety of application in motor vehicle lighting, traffic signals, advertising and general home lighting.

Halogen

Halogens, also referred as ?salt-formers,? are non-metallic chemical elements found on the periodic table in group 17. They comprise of chlorine (Cl), fluorine (F), bromine (Br), astatine (At) and iodine (I). Lighting fixtures with small amounts of a halogen compound give some of the best lighting options in the market and have found wide application in areas such as display lighting and reading bulbs.

Incandescent

Incandescent LightingIncandescent light fixtures glow brightly and emit visible light as a result of being heated to high temperatures. Incandescent light bulbs, for example, produce electric light when a filament wire inside the bulb glows brightly after it is heated by a high electric current passing through it. An evacuated glass tube or a glass tube filled with and inert gas like neon or helium protects the hot filament from oxidation.
